Unstable oxygen-containing molecules (e.g., superoxide, hydrogen peroxide) that damage cells.
Definition
ROS are byproducts of mitochondrial respiration and immune activity. At low levels they serve as signaling molecules; at high levels they drive oxidative damage. Often abbreviated ROS.
